Understanding CPR Certification

CPR also known as cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a life saving technique that has helped to save hundreds of lives. CPR restores circulation of oxygen-rich blood to the brain in accidents such as near-drownings, smoke inhalation, suffocation, electrocution injuries, poisoning, and suspected sudden infant death. Taking a course to obtain your CPR certification is something that most people should do especially if you work or volunteer around children and the elderly. Permanent brain damage or death can occur in as little as eight minutes without oxygen to the brain, so as you can see CPR is a very important skill to have that can save a life.

Taking a CPR certification course will give you the know how to help you respond confidently in an emergency situation. No matter what age you are you can take the course. Often times the course is paired with a First Aid course or Automated External Defibrillator (AED) course. Classes can be taken at your local Red Cross, YMCA, a school facility, or if you are in a large group many instructors can come to your location.  The cost of the certification course can be $10 or more, it varies by location. It may be cheaper for larger groups to take the course together. The course has to meet certain guidelines and hour requirements so please verify with the course instructor the length of time for the course. You will need to make sure you set aside enough time to receive credit for the course. Most certificates are valid for two years, then you will need to recertify. Recently some companies are starting to offer CPR training classes and  recertification classes online as an option.

During the certification class you will practice on manikins the proper breathing and chest compression techniques. The techniques will be different based on the size of the rescue victim. You may also use the defibrillator and some first aid materials as well.  Very good sanitation skills are used to make sure germs are not passed from person to person.

Being CPR certified is a great certification to have, you never know who's life you may save.
